How many porta potties do I need for my event?
An event needs 1 standard porta potty for every 50 guests when it lasts up to 4 hours, 1 for every 40 guests at 5 to 8 hours, and 1 for every 30 guests at 9 hours or more. Then add 1 unit per 100 guests when alcohol is served. Round every step up to a whole unit.
The method, step by step
- Pick the rate by length: up to 4 hours = 50 guests per unit; 5–8 hours = 40; 9+ hours = 30.
- Divide guests by that rate and round up.
- Alcohol served: add 1 unit for every 100 guests, rounded up.
- Public event: make 5% of units accessible, at least 1 (2010 ADA Standards §213.2).
- Food served: add 1 hand-washing station per 4 units, at least 1.
This is our in-house sizing method, built from field experience with guest flow and tank capacity (about 200 uses per standard unit). Event venues and permit offices may set their own counts; theirs win.

How many porta potties does a 150-guest wedding with a bar need?
A 150-guest wedding lasting 6 hours with a bar needs 6 standard porta potties. The rate for 6 hours is 1 per 40 guests, so 150 ÷ 40 = 3.75, rounded up to 4. Alcohol adds 150 ÷ 100 = 1.5, rounded up to 2. The total is 4 + 2 = 6 units.
- If guests include older relatives, make 1 of the 6 wheelchair-accessible.
- Food is served, so add 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5, rounded up to 2 hand-washing stations.
- Prefer flushing toilets? Swap 4 standard units for 2 deluxe units, or use a 2-station restroom trailer plus 1 standard unit.

Source: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. The minimum assumes weekly service; we recommend 1 unit per 10–15 workers for comfort. Farms follow a different rule: 1 toilet and 1 hand-washing station per 20 field workers within a quarter-mile walk (OSHA 1928.110). See construction porta potty rental.
