How many porta potties does a construction site need?
A construction site with 20 or fewer workers needs 1 toilet under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c), Table D-1. A site with 20 to 199 workers needs 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. A site with 200 or more needs 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers. A standard porta potty counts as 1 seat and 1 urinal.
| Workers on site | OSHA minimum | What we recommend |
|---|---|---|
| 1–20 | 1 unit | 1 unit; 2 if the crew is over 12 or the site is spread out |
| 21–40 | 1 unit | 2 units |
| 41–80 | 2 units | 3 units |
| 81–120 | 3 units | 4 units |
| 121–199 | 4–5 units | 1 unit per 30 workers |
| 200+ | 1 per 50 workers | 1 per 40 workers |
The legal minimum comes from OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. Our recommendation adds room for long shifts and big sites. Hand-washing is required too, under 1926.51(f), so add a hand-washing station when crews handle concrete, paint or chemicals. This is not legal advice; confirm with your safety lead.
How is a job site porta potty serviced?
A job site porta potty is serviced once a week on a set weekday. The driver pumps the waste tank, scrubs the seat, walls and floor, refills the deodorizer, and restocks toilet paper and sanitizer. Crews over 10 per unit, or 50-hour weeks, should add a second weekly visit.
- You pick the service day. Monday works well after weekend storms; Friday works before inspections.
- Nobody needs to meet the driver. Leave the gate code in the order notes.
- The driver can move the unit to a new spot on the same site during a service visit.
- A free hasp lock keeps the public out after hours.

Where should the porta potty go on a Lincoln job site?
Put the job site porta potty on firm, near-level ground within about 25 feet of where the service truck can park, away from trenches, material drops and crane swing paths. In new Lincoln subdivisions, the curb side of the lot keeps the truck on pavement and off fresh dirt.
- A unit in a Lincoln street, sidewalk or alley needs a right-of-way permit from Lincoln Transportation and Utilities. A unit on the lot itself does not.
- Open lots in Lincoln get strong spring and fall wind. Ask for stakes or straps if the unit stands alone.
- From November to March, units get a non-toxic antifreeze mix in the tank so they keep working. Read winter porta potty tips.
