What makes a porta potty wheelchair accessible?

A wheelchair-accessible porta potty has a ground-level floor with no step, a wide door, a 60-inch diameter turning space inside, grab bars beside the toilet and a lower seat height. These units are what most people call ADA or handicap porta potties. They also help seniors, parents with strollers and anyone on crutches.

How many accessible porta potties does my event need?

The 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2, require at least 5% of the portable toilets in each cluster to be accessible, and at least 1 when a cluster has any. An event with 1 to 20 units in one spot needs 1 accessible unit. An event with 21 to 40 units in one spot needs 2.

1–201
21–402
41–603
61–804

This is the legal minimum for public events. Private backyard parties are not covered, but one accessible unit is a kind choice when older guests attend. Confirm your event's rules with the venue or permit office. Read the standard at the U.S. Access Board.

Where should an accessible porta potty be placed?

An accessible porta potty must sit on a level, firm pad of about 8 × 8 feet, reached by a hard, smooth path such as a driveway, sidewalk or parking lot. A wheelchair cannot cross deep grass, loose gravel or a slope, so the path matters as much as the unit.

  • Put it at the end of a row of units, nearest the parking or the main walkway.
  • Keep the door clear of tents, coolers and cords.
  • On a job site, keep the path free of mud and debris. Plywood over soft ground works.

Accessible porta potty questions

Is an ADA porta potty the same as a handicap porta potty?

An ADA porta potty and a handicap porta potty mean the same thing in everyday use: a wheelchair-accessible unit with a ground-level floor, a wide door, grab bars and a 60-inch turning space.

Does the accessible porta potty come with a ramp?

Our accessible units have a ground-level floor, so no ramp is needed. The unit must sit on a level, hard surface so a wheelchair can roll straight in.

How much does a handicap porta potty cost in Lincoln?

A wheelchair-accessible porta potty for an event in Lincoln usually runs $225 to $295 for 1 to 5 days. For a job site it usually runs $195 to $260 per 28 days with weekly service.

Do I need an accessible unit for a backyard party?

A private backyard party has no legal requirement for an accessible unit. Many hosts add one when grandparents or guests with walkers attend, because a standard unit has a step and a narrow door.

Does my job site need an accessible porta potty?

A job site needs an accessible unit when a worker needs one as a reasonable accommodation. Talk with your safety lead; we can deliver one the same day in Lincoln.
